Presented is a collection of memorabilia from famed Hollywood director Stanley Kubrick. Kubrick (1928-1999) grew up in New York City and became interested in visual images at an early age. He became a freelance photographer and later worked as a photographer for Look magazine. He produced a number of low-budget films and eventually became a Hollywood filmmaker. His first major film was The Killers (1956). Kubrick's big break came when he directed Spartacus, a film that had a gigantic budget and a cast, including extras, of 10,000. The film, starring Kirk Douglas, was nominated for six Oscars and won four, and became a tremendous success, and put Kubrick into the big time. Kubrick became one of America's most famous filmmakers. He directed Lolita (1962), Dr. Strangelove (1964), and 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), for which he won an Oscar for Best Visual Effects. He made the controversial A Clockwork Orange in 1971. The offered memorabilia: 1) A business card from the period in Kubrick's life when he was pursuing a career in music as a drummer. The card is in nice condition. 2) A letter from photo manager at PM Daily introducing Stanley Kubrick as a freelance photographer. The letter reads, 'To whom it may concern; this is to introduce Stanley Kubrick, a Freelance Photographer whom we are trying out in the position of Staff Photographer....Sally Pepper/Photo Manager." The letter, on PM Daily stationery, has been folded into quarters and shows some very tiny tears, smudges, etc. 3) A New York Giants 1944 grandstand baseball pass, measures 2.75x3.6", showing wear, including toning and an ink spot and signed in pencil by long-time New York Giants executive Eddie Brannick. 4) Certificate of Naturalization measuring 10.1x10.6", dated March 26th, 1938, for Samuel Proweller, having an unknown relationship to the Kubrick family.
