Presented is a rare, circa 1948 Babe Ruth Day Type III Associated Press photo, taken on June 13th, the final time that Ruth was at Yankee Stadium. Ruth was already ill with throat cancer, and the illness had caused significant weight loss. The night before, Yankee owner Jacob Rupert had given a party at his brewery in honor of the 1923 Yankee World Champions, but Ruth was too ill to attend. On June 13th, Ruth's number 13 was going to be retired. Ruth was 53 years old, and his illness made walking, and even standing, difficult. As Ruth was about to go onto the field for the ceremonies, the Yankees' Eddie Robinson grabbed a nearby bat, belonging to Cleveland Indians Hall of Fame pitcher Bob Feller, and gave it to Ruth to use as a cane. Ruth spoke briefly to the crowd, and after the ceremonies were over, he changed out of his Yankees uniform and left Yankee Stadium, "The House That Ruth Built," for the last time. The Sultan of Swat passed away two months later, on August 16, 1948. The 5.7x9.1" black and white photo has "JUN 14 1948" stamped on the back. The back also has an "AUG 27 1950." Also, on the back is an approx. 1.5x4" cut of part of a newspaper article from an unspecified source. The article concerns the 1929 New York Yankees, and the clipping has an "AUG 27 1950" stamp. Even though the photo is a Type III, it is a rare find. The photo has been encapsulated and PSA certified Type III AUTHENTIC.
