Displayed is a Chuck Hinton Pittsburgh Steelers jersey that was game worn by the defensive tackle during the 1969 season. Hinton played football at North Carolina Central. Hinton was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in the NFL's 2nd Round in 1964, but Chuck had played for a relatively small college, and he didn't know the tricks of the trade of experienced NFL offensive lineman, so he was cut by the Browns and later that summer by the Baltimore Colts. Finally, the Pittsburgh Steelers gave Hinton a chance, and veteran defensive lineman Ernie Stautner gave Hinton inside tips on handling offensive linemen and Hinton began to bloom. He played nine seasons of professional football: Pittsburgh Steelers (1964-70), New York Jets (1971), Baltimore Colts (1972). In 123 games, Hinton recovered seven fumbles, one for a touchdown, and intercepted two passes, returning one for a touchdown. The NFL did not keep official statistics on tackles and sacks when Hinton played, so much of his defensive play does not show up in statistics. The front of the white jersey has 64 in black sewn-on numerals. Each sleeve has 64 also in black sewn-on numerals. The back has 64 in black sewn-on numerals. The black on the jersey shows fading because of the passage of time. There is no nameplate on the back as there wasn't a nameplate on the back of a Steelers jersey in the '69 season. The NFL 50th Anniversary patch was removed, but there is a clear outline on the left sleeve. There is a hologram, on the left inside seem, only from the Steelers.
