Rare cast-iron "baseball' that once adorned the famed marble rotunda at Ebbets Field. Original Ebbets Field stadium artifacts are scarce and this is one of several examples we know of that was miraculously saved following the demolition of the park in 1960. It also has a unique provenance. Our consignor's uncle was one of the workers tasked with the demolition of Ebbets Field. During the process, our consignor, who was nine at the time, visited his uncle on site and he was given this "baseball" as gift. He remembers his uncle said to him at the time, "hold on to this, someday it will be worth a lot." Like most extant examples, the offered "baseball" does not retain any of its original white paint and displays wear one would expect from an exposed stadium piece (the most noticeable flaws most likely occurred during the demolition). The concave reverse displays normal oxidation and there are three holes along the perimeter that were used for its original mounting (two still contain screws). The "baseball" measures 5.5" in diameter and weighs 3lbs 5oz. An outstanding and highly decorative display piece originating from one of baseball's most venerable stadiums of yore.
