Paul "Big Poison" Waner was a Hall of Fame right fielder who had 3,152 career hits. Presented is a circa 1930 Paul Waner Pittsburgh Pirates' game used Spalding professional model ash bat. Waner played 20 Major League seasons: Pittsburgh Pirates (1926-40), Brooklyn Dodgers (1941 & '43-'44), Boston Braves (1941-42), New York Yankees 1944-45). Paul's colorful nicknames derive from 1927 in the Polo Grounds in New York City, when a fan called out to Paul and his brother and outfield teammate, Lloyd Waner, and meant to call the players "Big Person" and "Little Person," but his accent made it sound as if the fan were calling out to "Big Poison" and "Little Poison," and the nicknames stuck. Paul Waner led the National League three times in batting average. and he was the 1927 NL MVP. In addition, Paul Waner and his fellow Hall of Famer, brother Lloyd, still hold the Major League record for most hits by brothers, at 5,811, more than the three DiMaggio brothers and the three Alou brothers. Waner had an astigmatism, but he didn't wear glasses at bat because the glasses made an incoming pitch clear but small, whereas not wearing glasses made the pitch large but fuzzy. Waner preferred the larger but fuzzy version, and he must have made the correct choice: He batted .333 lifetime. The bat has a length of 35.0", and a weight of 36.2 ounces. Etched into the label is "Spalding Trade Mark/HAND TURNED/No. 200 [model]/Oil Temp." The barrel has an etched Paul Waner facsimile signature. The bat has a flame-burned finish. The bat is uncracked and shows evidence of outstanding use: Several ball marks are visible on the barrel. The Spalding trademark is stamped on the knob. The bat comes with a PSA/DNA Letter of Grading and Authenticity. The PSA/DNA certification is #1B29402 and the bat grade is PSA GU 8. It's tough to find a Paul Waner game used bat, is this one is a beautiful bat with really nice use and a valued collectible from the 5'8" hitter known as "Big Poison."
