Displayed is a Tris Speaker signed photograph credited to famed photographer George Burke. Speaker was a Hall of Fame center fielder who is regarded as one of the best all-around outfielders of all time. Known as "the Gray Eagle," Speaker played a remarkably close center field, sometimes so close to second base that he was credited with a number of putouts at the keystone sack when he was playing center field. Because Speaker was so adept at breaking back for a ball, his close-in play in center field robbed batters of hundreds of hits over the years. In addition, Speaker's powerful and accurate arm garnered him 449 outfield assists, the most in American league history. As a hitter, Speaker batted .345, in a 22-year career spent mostly with the Boston Red Sox and the Cleveland Indians. His 792 lifetime doubles are an American League record. The photo, measured at approx. 4x6", was printed by famed photographer George Burke - but this may not have been taken by him, as he was known to also use others' photos at times. The offered photo does have Burke's stamp on the back. The back also has a typed "Tris Speaker 988 N3." The photo was likely printed in the 1930s, and the photo has some toning. The signature is in black ink. The photo has been encapsulated and graded by PSA as MINT 9 - almost perfect.
