Baltimore Orioles road jersey worn by pitcher Hal Brown during the 1957 season. The gray flannel zipper-front jersey is lettered "Baltimore" across the front and features the number "28" on the left breast and reverse. All letters and numerals are applied in orange on black felt. A Spalding label appears on the left front tail. The year, uniform number, and size ("57 28 44") are chain-stitched in black upon a gray strip tag in the collar. A Baltimore Orioles team patch appears on the left sleeve. A wash tag is located on the interior front tail. Brown has signed the jersey in black marker (grading 8/10) on the upper left breast/shoulder area. It should be noted that the Orioles did not start the season with numbers on the front. We have seen other examples with and without front numbers, so it is not known if numbers were added during the course of the season or later, perhaps when the jerseys were reused the following spring or in the minors. (Numbers appeared on the front of all Orioles jerseys beginning in 1958.) Aside from that anomaly, the jersey is original as issued and displays moderate wear, including a small tear in the rear numeral 2. The zipper remains fully functional. Brown appeared in 25 games with the Orioles in 1957, finishing the year with a record of 7-8 and a 3.90 ERA.
