Displayed is a terrific, signed photograph by Hall of Fame New York Yankees left-hander Herb Pennock to fellow Hall of Famer Lefty Gomez, another New York Yankees left-hander. Herb Pennock pitched in the Major Leagues from 1912-34: Philadelphia Athletics (1912-15), Boston Red Sox (1915-17 & 1919-22 & 1934), New York Yankees (1923-33). After his playing career, Pennock became a coach and front office executive, best known for his time as the general manager of the Philadelphia Phillies, where he was largely responsible for assembling the young players who eventually won the 1950 NL Pennant and became known as "The Whiz Kids." Pennock is best known for his years with the Bronx Bombers. He had a lifetime MLB record of 241-162, with a 3.60 ERA. He was a 5-time World Champion. As a youth growing up in Pennsylvania, Pennock attended the Cedarcroft Boarding School and was converted from a first baseman to a pitcher because of light hitting and the fact that he could not throw the baseball straight - a tendency that went from a liability to a huge asset when he became a pitcher. At Cedarcroft, in 1912, he threw a no-hitter, and his catcher was Earle Mack, the son of the Philadelphia Athletics Hall of Fame manager Connie Mack. Naturally, Connie Mack heard of Pennock and soon signed him for the Athletics. Financial concerns forced Mack to deal Pennock to the Boston Red Sox in 1915, but after becoming a Yankee, Pennock won 162 games. Lefty Gomez was on the New York Yankees from 1930-42, and he finished his Major League career with the Washington Senators in 1943. He had a lifetime 189-102 record, with a 3.34 ERA. He was a 2-time winner of the Pitching Triple Crown and a 5-time World Champion. Gomez and Pennock were on the Yankees together from 1930-32. This signed Pennock photo came out of a 1932 album of Yankees signed photos. The album came from the estate of Lefty Gomez, and the photos from his teammates were signed to him. The photo itself is a treasure; it is by famed photographer George Burke and in EX condition, and PSA has labeled it as a Type I. The salutation on the photo reads, "To 'Lefty' my boy with best wishes." Pennock's signature and salutation are in black fountain ink, and the signature is 8/10. The reverse of the 4x6" photo has a Burke photography stamp reading, "Geo. C. Burke/837 Belmont Ave./Chicago, Ill." The signed photo has been encapsulated and PSA/DNA graded as AUTHENTIC. The signed photo makes a wonderful remembrance of this accomplished baseball "lifer" as Pennock signed photos are rare.
