Original Pro Football Hall of Fame bust presented to Earle "Greasy" Neale at his Hall of Fame induction in 1969. Accompanied by a collection of seven vintage black & white photographs (8x10") of Neale at the 1969 Hall of Fame induction ceremonies, including two picturing him holding this bust. All Pro Football Hall of Fame inductees are presented with a replica of their official Hall of Fame bust that resides in the Hall's permanent collection. Because of their singular nature, and the fact that most are retained by the player's family after death, these busts are seldom seen at auction. This is just the second Pro Football Hall of Fame player bust we have offered and we cannot recall having seen more than one or two others at auction in the past twenty years. Neale, who played with Jim Thorpe on the Canton Bulldogs in 1917, was also a starting member of the 1919 World Champion Cincinnati Reds (he batted .357 in the 1919 World Series against the infamous "Black Sox"). His induction to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, however, was due to his success as a coach. Neale coached the Philadelphia Eagles from 1941 to 1950. During that span he won three divisional titles and two NFL Championships. The bust, constructed of plaster that is painted a reddish brown, stands eighteen inches high and bears the artist's initials, "GW" on the reverse of the pedestal. The base measures 7.5x6 inches. Several minor abrasions/tiny chips affect the bust, and there is significant chipping along the front edge of the base. In addition to the previously mentioned seven black & white photos, the bust is also accompanied by three smaller color photos taken during the 1969 Hall of Fame weekend, including two taken at the Hall of Fame game.
