One-page typed letter, dated April 20, 1912, signed by William Taft, 27th President of the United States. In his letter, on "The White House" letterhead, Taft writes to Mr. L. L. Caftanzoglu, Charge d' Affaires for Greece, thanking him for his sentiments of sympathy regarding the recent Titanic disaster. In part: "I have received your telegram of April 19th expressing the sympathy of yourself and the Greeks residing in America with the American people in the terrible disaster to the Titanic." Signed "Wm. H. Taft" in black fountain pen (grading 7/10). The luxury liner RMS Titanic sank in the North Atlantic Ocean on April 15, 1912, killing approximately 1,500 of the 2,224 passengers on board. This letter dates just five days following the tragedy and reflects the amount of sympathy shown by other countries to the terrible disaster. The letter (6.5x8.5"; visible dimensions) displays a horizontal fold and a few light creases. The number "3175" (meaning unknown) is written in pencil near the top border. In apparent Excellent condition. Matted and framed together with a vintage portrait photo (6.75x8.5"; visible dimensions; apparent EX-MT) of Taft produced by the "Bacharach" photography studio (credit stamp in the lower right corner). Total dimensions: 21x15.25". Full LOA from PSA.
