Displayed is a stylish, 1960s "Welcome Dodgers-Angels" banner from when the two clubs shared Dodger Stadium from 1962-65. The Los Angeles Dodgers, after moving from Brooklyn, first arrived in L.A. for the 1958 season. That year, and through the 1961 season, they used the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum as the team's first home, with 90,000 seats and a crazy, 40-foot screen in left field, only 250 feet from home plate, used to prevent too many cheap home runs. Then in 1962, the Dodgers moved to Dodger Stadium in the Chavez Ravine section of L.A. It was then a beautiful new 56,000 stadium, and the team is still there. When the expansion Los Angeles Angels entered the American League for the 1961 season, the team started play at Wrigley Field, the Los Angeles version, a former minor league ballpark. After drawing only 603,510 fans at Wrigley Field for its inaugural season, the Angels made a deal with the Dodgers, and the two teams shared Dodger Stadium for the stadium's first four seasons (1962-65). In that '62 season, the Angels' star was felt fielder Leon "Daddy Wags" Wagner, who hit 37 home runs. The Angels drew 1,144,063 that year, and the Dodgers drew 2,755,184 fans, so Dodger Stadium was a popular place to be. The Dodgers were becoming a top-drawer team that year. They finished with a 103-63 record, good for second place in the National League. Hall of Famer Maury Wills stole 104 bases, and Hall of Fame pitchers Don Drysdale and Sandy Koufax were reaching their primes. After the Angels' surprising 86-76 '62 season and a fourth-place finish out of 10 American League teams, the Angels' attendance started to diminish. The Dodgers were flourishing both in performance and attendance, and the team won the 1964 World Series. When the Angels moved to the team's new home, at Anaheim Stadium in 1965, the club's attendance soared. Thus, the offered lightweight canvas banner, measuring 52x60", was to welcome home both Los Angeles teams for an unspecified year between 1962-66. The banner reads, "WELCOME DODGERS-ANGELS/Dodger Stadium/Los Angeles." The center of the banner features an image of Dodger Stadium. A tag on the underside reads, "JONES DECORATING CO. INC. LOS ANGELES." The banner's red, white, and blue color scheme cleverly includes the Dodgers' blue and white colors with the Angels' red and white colors. The eye-appeal of the banner is enhanced with gold-colored fringe. The banner is in great condition, and it hearkens back to the day when the City of Los Angeles had two Major League teams playing within the city limits at Dodger Stadium.
