Known as "the Gray Eagle," Hall of Famer Tris Speaker is one of the best center fielders of all-time. Presented is a Tris Speaker triple-signed 1933 stock certificate for the Kansas City Baseball Club, the Blues, an American Association minor league team. Speaker played 22 Major League seasons: Boston Red Sox (1907-15), Cleveland Indians (1916-26), Washington Senators (1927), Philadelphia Athletics (1928). His lifetime .345 career average is the sixth-highest all-time in MLB. He had 3,514 hits and 436 stolen bases. Speaker was a superb center fielder who was known for playing incredibly close to second base. He did this, especially in the dead-ball era in the first half of his career, because, in his words, "I can save more games by cutting off some of those [potential bloop hits] than I can lose by having an occasional fly ball go over my head." As for MLB records for outfielders, Speaker trails only Willie Mays in putouts (Speaker's 6,788 to Mays' 7,112); Speaker is the all-time leader in assists (449), and Speaker is the all-time leader in double plays (143). Speaker would frequently cut off what would normally be a single and turn it into a force-out at second base. Great sportswriter Grantland Rice described Speaker's overall game as, "... smooth as a summer wind." After his playing career, when he was sometimes a player-manager, Speaker became a broadcaster, and he was also the part-owner of the Kansas City Blues, a top-level minor-league club, and the manager, in the early part of the season. The offered stock certificate was issued to Tris Speaker when he was also the secretary of the team. The actual certificate measures 8.4x13.4" (with its receipt attachment), and it is signed on the front and back by Speaker. The certificate is for 76 shares of common stock. The 3.25x8.4" receipt attachment is also signed by Speaker. The stock certificate is dated February 11, 1933. The signatures are 8/10 black fountain ink. The stock certificate and attachment have some slight foxing at the edges, but overall are in nice condition. The offering comes with a full PSA/DNA LOA (Certificate Number AN02033) for the signatures.
