Mickey Mantle's magnificent 1956 season was one for the ages. Presented is a hardcover book, titled My Favorite Summer 1956, chronicling that '56 campaign, written by Mantle and noted sportswriter Phil Pepe, and signed by both Mantle and Pepe. Mickey was in his sixth season with the New York Yankees in '56, and although Mantle received great acclaim during 1961, when he and Roger Maris chased Babe Ruth's single season home run record of 60, Mantle's overall best season was '56. In that year, Hall of Famer Mantle won the American League Triple Crown with a .353 batting average, 52 home runs, and 130 RBIs. Mantle also won the AL MVP Award in '56, and helped the Yankees win the World Series over the Brooklyn Dodgers. Mantle played his entire 18-year Major League career with the Yankees, and he also won AL MVP Awards in '56 and '62. He helped the Yankees to seven World Championships, and he was a 20-time All-Star, and with 536 home runs - the most home runs by any switch hitter in baseball history. My Favorite Summer 1956 is 246 pages, including 14 pages of photographs. The book was published by Doubleday, copyright 1991. The essentially "as-told-to" book is written in Mantle's first-person words, and it covers many events in the '56 season, including the '56 World Series and Don Larsen's perfect game, in which Mantle made a key catch in center field. There are many anecdotes in the book about Mantle's fellow Yankee Hall of Famers, such as manager Casey Stengel, Yogi Berra, and Whitey Ford. Mantle signed on the flyleaf in black ink from a ballpoint pen, and Mantle signed in his usual beautifully crafted script. Pepe signed under Mantle's signature, neatly signing in blue ink from a marker. The book comes with a 4.25x5.25" article from an unknown newspaper advertising a book signing on April 11 (presumably 1991) at Barnes & Nobles at Fifth Ave. and 48th Street in Manhattan, NYC, in which Mantle was scheduled to sign this book. The book is in excellent condition, and it makes a memorable Mantle collectible.
