Offered is a fascinating treat from the past - a 18x10.5" colorful sporting calendar that is centered on Detroit. Large images portray a different sport for each month, along with a calendar page that includes sporting events. This was a promotional giveaway to Detroit area bars that sold Altes Beer, and it was distributed by the Altes Brewing Company, then a Detroit brewer. The calendar is complete, and it lists most sporting events in the Detroit area and some National events. There are pages that feature baseball (Tigers), hockey (Red Wings) and football. Other pages portray fishing, hunting, skiing, boxing, etc. Each section also includes a saying, often a pun, about both the specific sport that is shown and Altes Beer. For example, the section on tennis says, "For an ace, serve Altes Beer, and the hockey pages say, under photos of beer, "The finest thing on ice." The bright images show sports as they were just at the time that World War II was beginning for the United States. Hockey players have no helmets, nor do baseball players. The uniforms and equipment for each sport present a way to look back into vintage times. The calendar is in very good condition.
