"He had this ability to go full speed, cut and then go full speed again right away," said teammate and Hall of Fame linebacker Dick Butkus. "We played live, and I saw it every day in practice. You could never get a clean shot at Gale. Never." Presented are two rare, signed Gale Sayers jerseys. Gale Sayers played seven years in the NFL, all for the Chicago Bears as a halfback and returner. Sayers was a 2-time NFL rushing leader and a 1-time scoring leader who gained 4,956 yards rushing, for a 5.0 average. He was the NFL Rookie of the Year in 1965, and the league's Comeback Player of the Year when he returned from a serious knee injury in 1969. Known as the "Kansas Comet," he also returned 91 kickoffs for 2,781 yards and six touchdowns and added two touchdowns on punt returns. Knee injuries cut short his career, and Sayers became the youngest man to be elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, at age 34 in 1972. 1) The white jersey has "40" on the chest, in dark navy letters with orange trim. Each sleeve has "40", also in dark navy with orange trim and dark blue and orange striping. The back has "SAYERS" again in dark navy trimmed with orange on the nameplate. There is a JSA hologram on the numeral "4," of Sayers' "40" on the back. Gale Sayers has neatly and boldly signed the jersey on the "4" in silver marker. 2) The dark navy jersey has "40" on the chest in white numerals trimmed with orange. Each sleeve has "40" in white with orange trim and three orange stripes, each trimmed in white. On the back nameplate is "SAYERS" in white letters trimmed in orange. Under the name is "40" in white numerals trimmed in orange. On the numeral "4," Sayers has written his signature, signing neatly and boldly in black marker. The "4" also has a JSA hologram. A book and movie, both titled Brians's Song, were made about the friendship between Gale and fellow running back Brian Piccolo, who was battling terminal cancer. Sayers himself passed away in 2020. The signed Gale Sayers jerseys provide a link to this great player, one that Hall of Famer Mike Ditka called, "The greatest player I've ever seen. That's right - the greatest."
