"Jim Crow was king... and I heard a game in which Jackie Robinson was playing, and I felt pride in being alive," recalled Hall of Famer Lou Brock, who as a youth growing up in Louisiana was a fan of Robinson's Brooklyn Dodgers. His natural talent coupled with his astute analysis paid off. In 1974, he surpassed Maury Wills' single season stolen base record of 104 when he stole 118 bases. Then in 1977, Brock broke Ty Cobb's career record of 892 and Brock eventually extended this all-time mark to 938 at his retirement. Brock still stands second only to Ricky Henderson both in the modern MLB single season stolen base category and in all-time Major League steals.
