"Jim Crow was king... and I heard a game in which Jackie Robinson was playing, and I felt pride in being alive," recalled Hall of Famer Lou Brock, who as a youth growing up in Louisiana was a fan of Robinson's Brooklyn Dodgers. Offered is the opportunity to possess a single signed baseball from Brock's rookie season, in 1962 with the Chicago Cubs, when he was starting a career that would lead to his at one time holding both the single season and career Major League stolen base records. Brock was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals at the trading deadline in 1964, and his career started to blossom. Brock had tremendous speed and he coupled this with a crafty intelligence. In 1964, he obtained a movie camera and filmed the motions and pick-off moves of opposing pitchers and studied the films to detect the hurlers' tendencies. His natural talent coupled with his astute analysis paid off. In 1974, he surpassed Maury Wills' single season stolen base record of 104 when he stole 118 bases. Then in 1977, Brock broke Ty Cobb's career record of 892 and Brock eventually extended this all-time mark to 938 at his retirement. Brock still stands second only to Ricky Henderson both in the modern MLB single season stolen base category and in all-time Major League steals. Brock's signature is on the sweet spot in 9/10 blue ballpoint pen. The Official Major League Baseball (Selig) is close to NRMT. All in Brock's hand is "Lou Brock, HOF 85, Rookie Year 196[2], Chicago Cubs." A single signed baseball from the rookie season of Brock, a legendary base stealer, is a prized collectible.
