Presented is a varied assortment of eleven baseball pennants. Each of the pennants is roughly 28-29" in length. 1-2) Two Philadelphia Athletics' pennants, date unknown. Each is blue, with white lettering and the logo of the team, a White Elephant. Back in the early days of the American League, New York Giants manager John "Muggsy" McGraw, perhaps feeling his National League threatened by the upstart American league, derisively termed the Philadelphia Athletics of Connie Mack "White Elephants," meaning they would be burdensome failures. Mack seized on the insult and defiantly made a White Elephant the team's logo, and the Athletics won seven pennants and five World Series in the team's tenure in Philadelphia, which ran through 1954 before the club moved to Kansas City. 3-4) Two Philadelphia Phillies pennants, dates unknown. One pennant, seemingly the older of the two, is red with white lettering and images, and the other pennant is white, with predominantly red trim and a multi-colored image. 5) A pennant featuring the July 9, 1996, All-Star game at Philadelphia's Veterans Stadium. Fittingly, for a game close to July 4th, and held in the cradle of liberty, the pennant is in patriotic red, white, and blue. 6-8) Three pennants featuring the 1980 American League Champion Kansas City Royals. One pennant is predominately white, and it includes a color image of the team. The second pennant is in blue, with gold lettering, and this pennant includes the names of the Royals' players. The third pennant is blue, with white lettering. 9) A blue pennant for the 1966 World Series between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Baltimore Orioles. 10) A pennant for the 1983 World Series Champions, the Baltimore Orioles. It contains the names of the players and manager Joe Altobelli. 10-11) Two pennants in honor of Hank Aaron becoming the new home run king in passing babe Ruth's total of 714 home runs. One pennant includes an Aaron likeness and is dated "1974," and it shows "715" and reads, "Hank Aaron All Time Home Run Champion". The other pennant also contains an Aaron likeness, and it reads "Hank Aaron Home Run King." Some of the older pennants exhibit some, usually slight, fading of colors because of time. A few of the tips of the pennants, and a few of the strands of felt that could be used to secure the pennant to a wooden stick, are frayed or have a tiny piece of the end missing or wrinkled. Overall, the pennants are in excellent shape, and they can add a colorful, varied look to any sports assemblage.
