But even Satchel Paige himself would admit to the joy of indulging in a bit of nostalgia. Paige was signed by Bill Veeck to play for the Cleveland Indians in July of 1948. He had a 6-1 record, with a 2.48 ERA, and in 1948, he became the first African American player to pitch in a World Series game.
