Roberto Clemente wanted so much to get 3,000 hits, and on September 30, 1972, he did get his 3,000th hit in Inning 4 of the last game he would play in that season. Sadly, that hit would be his last hit because on December 31, 1972, Clemente perished in an airplane accident when the plane he had chartered to deliver emergency supplies to victims of an earthquake in Nicaragua crashed into the ocean off the coast of Puerto Rico. Offered is a 5.5" x 8.5" promotional black and white photo of Clemente from Grenier Tire Service, a Pittsburgh area firm from Jeannette, PA. The photo was issued during the 1969 season, when Clemente hit .345 with 19 home runs and 91 RBIs. Lifetime, Clemente hit .319, with 240 home runs. He was a superb right fielder with a miraculous arm. He was a National League MVP in 1966, a 2-time World Series champion, a 15-time All-Star and he won four batting titles. The photo, picturing Clemente in the sleeveless Pirates jersey often wore in that era, was part of an eight-player set of photographs (including fellow Hall of Famers Willie Stargell and Bill Mazeroski) used as promotional giveaways by the tire service. The photo was encapsulated and graded by PSA, and the photo appears harshly under graded as it is in a condition that appears far better than the grade of EX-MT that was assigned by PSA.
