Displayed is a ticket stub to the first baseball game ever played at Cleveland's Municipal Stadium, a 1-0 victory by the visiting Philadelphia Athletics on July 31, 1932. A crowd of 80,184 (a Major League record at the time) attended this daytime opener. In an example of how baseball has changed in ninety years, the game took only 1:50 to play. Hall of Famer Left Grove went the distance for the shutout. The only run of the game scored on a single by Hall of Fame catcher Mickey Cochrane in the top of Inning Eight. In addition to Grove and Cochrane, Hall of Famers playing for the Athletics included Al Simmons, Jimmie Foxx, and manager Connie Mack. Managing the Indians was Roger Peckinpaugh. Hall of Famers playing for Cleveland were center fielder Earl Averill and third baseman Willie Kamm. The NFL Cleveland Rams and the Cleveland Browns also called Municipal Stadium home. The last year that the Indians played at Municipal Stadium was 1993. The stub is for an upper box seat, and it cost $1.65. The stub has a near perfect front, but some damage on the back. The stadium was the home of the 1948 World Champion Indians. The 2.5x3.25" stub provides an apt remembrance to a Cleveland institution.
