Honus Wagner was one of the greatest baseball players of all time, and he was one of only five inaugural inductees to the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Presented is a 1940 Pittsburgh Pirates' scorecard with Wagner's signature. Bill James, in his Bill James Historical Baseball Abstract, rates Wagner as the second greatest baseball player of all-time. Wagner played 21 seasons, mostly for Pittsburgh, and he led the National League in hits eight times. The shortstop also led the NL in RBIs and stolen bases five times each. The "Flying Dutchman" hit .327 lifetime, with 3,420 hits. The scorecard has not been scored. Wagner's neat signature is in pencil on the edge of the Pirates' roster, on page 9. Wagner was a hitting coach for the Pirates from 1933-1952. The scorecard measures 6.9" x 10.1 inches. There are a few small places on pages 8-9, the actual pages intended for scoring, that have been cut out or torn, but Wagner's signature is unaffected. The scorecard sold for 10 cents and features charming advertisements such as one for rooms in a nice hotel for $3.00 a night, and a Clark candy bar for 5 cents, The scorecard lists the names of Hall of Fame players such as the Pirates' Lloyd Big Poison" Waner, and Paul "Little Poison" Waner, and the Chicago Cubs player-manager Gabby Hartnett, but the true value in the scorecard rests in the signature of Honus Wagner, a genuine baseball immortal.
