Walter Johnson, winner of 417 games, was an incredibly fast pitcher. His long arms gave his delivery a whip-like action and only Johnson's fear of seriously injuring a batter kept batters intact. Offered is a signed check from The Big Train, one of only five inaugural inductees into the National baseball Hall of Fame. Johnson pitched his entire career with the Washington Senators, from 1907-1927. Fellow inaugural Hall of Fame inductee Ty Cobb describes the first time he batted against Johnson, in 1907. The first time I faced him something went by me that made me flinch.... The thing (baseball) just hissed with danger. Every one of us (the Tigers) knew we'd met the most powerful arm ever turned loose in a ballpark. Johnson holds the MLB record for most shutouts with 110. He was a 2-time American League MVP, a 3-time winner of the pitching Triple Crown, a 6-time AL wins leader, and a 5-time Al ERA leader. Johnson wrote this check on August 16, 1940, and it was drawn on The Germantown Bank, of Germantown, Maryland. It is written to the "Phillips Petroleum Co." in the amount of $22.13. Johnson signed with a fountain pen in blue ink. It makes a great keepsake as it is neatly signed with the same right hand that could throw a ball that struck out 3,508 batters, some of them terrified. It is a beautifully written signature, encapsulated and graded PSA AUTO GRSDE GEM MT 10.
