Rare and striking advertising display, issued by the Pictorial News Company of New York, commemorating the 1912 World Series between the Boston Red Sox and New York Giants. This is the first example of this advertising display we have ever offered and we cannot recall the last time we have seen another. Measuring an enormous 32.5x23.5", the design features a panoramic photo at the top, with team photos of both the Red Sox and Giants directly below. The lettering along the top border reads "World's Championship Baseball, 1912." Additional text identifies the panoramic image as a game-in-progress scene from Game 2 of the 1912 World Series played at Fenway Park in Boston. Both the teams and each of the individual players pictured are identified in print along the bottom border, including Christy Mathewson, John McGraw, Rube Marquard, and Wilbert Robinson for the Giants, and Tris Speaker, Harry Hooper, and Joe Wood for the Red Sox. The Pictorial News Company credit appears along the base. This is a spectacular photographic display and it it must be seen in person to truly appreciate its scale. The panoramic image itself measures 29.5x7" and is equal in size to most stand-alone panoramas from the era, while each team photo measures 14x11.5". The Pictorial News Company was known for its panoramic photography and this piece, issued to promote its service, certainly highlights the company's expertise in providing large-scale images. The Red Sox defeated the Giants in eight games (one game ended in a tie) in the 1912 World Series, giving Boston its first of an eventual four World Championships during the decade. The display, which appears to be dry mounted, displays several small chips and tears along the border, as well moderate creasing throughout. Also evident are a few light abrasions and several tack holes along the perimeter. Although the display is in Good to condition, most of the flaws are not very distracting and it is closer to Excellent in its overall appearance. Matted and framed to total dimensions of 43.25x34.5". Please note: the size and/or weight of this lot will necessitate an increased shipping charge.
