Stan Musial was very smart about hitting, as the St. Louis Cardinal Hall of Famer won seven batting titles, hit 475 home runs, and batted .331 lifetime. But "Stan the Man" was also very smart about money. To wit, his advice on getting a good salary: "The first principle of contract negotiations is don't remind them of what you did in the past," said Musial. "Tell them what you're going to do in the future." Musial was no financial piker. He thought ahead. Musial explains, "I was always worried about my baseball career, about getting hurt, and I wanted a business to fall back on." So, Stan went into a fifty-fifty partnership with Biggie Garagnani, a St. Louis restaurateur. Musial's fame and warm personality drew many customers, and the restaurant was a huge success for many years. Speaking of Musial's finances, presented is a group of fifty Stan Musial checks, each neatly signed by The Man himself as "Stanley Musial." The checks are from the First national Bank in St. Louis. Most of these checks are cancelled and they don't involve high finance, but rather day-to-day checks that together present an inside look at Musial's day-to-day life. The checks all show a neatly written signature, possibly because he knew many of his smaller checks might not ever get cashed in order to keep his autograph. But these are checks that primarily were cashed. A few of the checks have very small tears. We see some checks to influential publications, such as The Wall Street Journal and U.S. News and World Report. We see many small checks to local businesses. And we see Musial's charity giving, with checks from Stan the Man to two different churches and to the Christian Brothers. These signed checks show the human side of a smart man who everyone, inside and outside of baseball, really liked, and a man who also happened to be one of baseball's all-time best players, and a Hall of Fame legend.
