New York Yankees home jersey worn by Lou Piniella during his first season as Yankees manager in 1986. The white pinstriped knit jersey displays the Yankees NY logo on the left breast and the number 14 on the reverse, each applied in navy tackle twill. The player name, year, and set number (Piniella 86 1) are chain-stitched in black upon a white strip tag in the collar. Located on the left front tail are a Wilson label and adjacent 44 size tag. A memorial black band, which was worn by all Yankees players in 1986 to honor Roger Maris, who died in December, 1985, has been removed from the left sleeve, but the stitch outline remains clearly visible. Incredibly, this jersey has been photo matched to no fewer than eight different Getty images of Piniella on the field in 1986. (Getty images: 511703130, 511703094, 511703100, 511703102, 75621451, 511703112, 511703078, and 511428116). Except for the removal of the memorial armband, the jersey is all original and displays excellent wear. "Sweet Lou" Piniella was one of the Yankees most popular players during the club's 1970s World Championship dynasty. The 1969 American League Rookie of the Year with the Royals, Piniella joined the Yankees in 1974 and remained with the club until his retirement in 1984. In 1986 he was hired to manage the club, but after three seasons he tired of owner George Steinbrenner's meddling and left the club for good. Piniella enjoyed a successful 23-year managerial career with several clubs, which included a 1990 World Championship with the Reds in 1990.
