Vintage mounted photograph picturing the 1881 Yale baseball team, including Walter Camp. The formal studio photo captures nine uniformed team members posing together, with Camp standing in the back row to the far right. One of the seated players holds an early style catcher's mask, while another player holds a bat. Camp, who was a stellar athlete and competed in a number of sports, is best known today for his many contributions to the game of football. Camp starred for six seasons with the Yale football team and also coached the squad. In 1877, while playing at Yale, Camp became a member of the national football rules committee and over time he was instrumental in transitioning the rules of rugby to create the modern game of football we know today. Camp was a prolific writer of the game and remained on the rules committee until 1925. Among his many contributions to the sport were the creation of the line of scrimmage, a system of downs, the point system, and the creation of the quarterback position. Following his playing career, he coached Yale for five seasons (1888-1892), during which time three of his clubs were later recognized as National Champions. Today, he holds the unofficial title as the "Father of American Football." The photo measures 8.75x7" and is mounted onto a slightly larger cardboard backing. Two Brown Brothers credit stamps appear on the reverse backing, along with a handwritten pencil notation reading "Yale 1881 Baseball." NM-MT. Although this is clearly a vintage photo, because it has been mounted, PSA will not accept it for evaluation, therefore, no guarantee can be made regarding a specific Type designation. Culled from the legendary Brown Brothers Photo Archive.
