Original Type I photograph of pitcher Carl Mays as a member of the New York Yankees. Mays is pictured posing in front of the dugout as he gazes directly into the camera. Two Brown Brothers credit stamps appear on the reverse, along with Mays’ name and a few additional handwritten notations. Mays was a member of the Yankees from 1919 to 1923, but the hat style shown here was only used during the three-year span 1919 to 1921. Mays was one of the best pitchers in baseball during that time winning 62 games, including a league-leading 27 in 1921. Despite those accomplishments he will forever be remembered for his beaning of Ray Chapman in 1920, which resulted in Chapman’s death. It remains the only on-field fatality in Major League Baseball. The photo measures 5.75x7.75” and displays a few light creases. VG-EX. Culled from the legendary Brown Brothers Photo Archive. PSA encapsulated as Type I Authentic.
