Few hockey personalities have been as widely-beloved as "Badger" Bob Johnson, who spent over 40 years as player and coach at both the college and pro levels. This special sign hung in the Pittsburgh Penguins locker room at the Civic Arena after Johnson's passing in 1991, just months after leading the Pens to the Stanley Cup Championship. Sporting Pittsburgh colors - black letters on a gold background - the plastic sign measures 48x12" and cites the coach's catchphrase describing his passion for the sport - "It's a Great Day For Hockey," with his name in the bottom right corner in script. The double-sided tape with which it stuck to the wall remains on back and there are holes for hanging in each top corner; shows wear, mostly to the corner with Johnson's name - that would make sense as per hockey tradition the players likely touched it with their stick or glove before taking the ice. Nicknamed "Badger" for his 16-year tenure as coach at the University of Wisconsin, he also coached professionally for the Calgary Flames as well as the US Olympic and National teams.
