In 1999, Secretariat became the first Thoroughbred to be selected to have his own United States Postal stamp. This honor represented a landmark occasion for Thoroughbred racing and further underscored the wide national appeal of the sport’s most famous American icon. On Oct. 16, 1999, Keeneland Racecourse hosted the first public unveiling of the official Secretariat postal stamp amid much fanfare and media attention. This framed commemorative display that marks the historic occasion was presented to Secretariat's owner Penny Chenery and was proudly displayed in her residence as part of her personal collection until her passing in 2017. The commemorative presentation piece showcases the official 33-cent Secretariat stamp that features the blinkered portrait of the Meadow Stable champion. On a nationwide ballot in September 1998, voters selected the 1973 Triple Crown winner as one of the 15 commemorative stamps saluting the 1970s, the first racehorse to be so honored. The stamp's familiar design was based upon the famous Ken Regan photograph of the chestnut champion that appeared on the June cover of TIME Magazine issue released just prior to the 1973 Belmont Stakes. The attractive presentation display, measuring 14" x 16" in total, features custom green matting set within a gilded gold frame and an engraved name plate that reads "1970s Celebrates the Century, Secretariat Stamp Unveiling, Lexington KY, October 16, 1999." The stamp unveiling display has been officially catalogued in the Secretariat/Meadow Stable Archive Registry and is accompanied by its own individual letter of authenticity from the Chenery/Tweedy family.
