Belmont Park in New York beckons in the fall with its cooler temperatures and some of the finest races in the sport. On Nov. 7, 2006 the card was set with talent including the 4-year-old regally-bred colt named War Front. A son of Danzig and trained by the great Allen Jerkens, War Front was a consistent force at the highest level of racing competition. He had captured the Grade 2 Alfred Vanderbilt Breeders’ Cup Handicap and placed in the Grade 1 Forego Stakes in his two previous starts and was considered one of the leading sprinters in the nation as he stepped onto the track for the the six-furlong Vosburgh Stakes that autumn day. War Front would finish second, but the official race chart provides glimpses of both his courage and his class when it states he "dug in gamely to earn the place award." He wore this very saddlecloth in this most prestigious race. The hand-stitched official New York Racing Association white saddlecloth features War Front's name and his race entry number "2" embroidered in black. Even after nearly 15 years since its original use, the saddlecloth still contains remnants of racetrack dirt from the action of the race. However, the historical significance of this saddlecloth is not in the event's running or even War Front's accomplished racing career, in which he finished in the money in 10 of his 13 starts with total earnings of $424,205. The son of Danzig is currently considered one of the world’s leading sires and his 2020 stud fee of $250,000 was one of the highest in North America. Yet his impact upon the sport has been felt worldwide through the abundant accomplishments of his progeny, accounting for eight international champions and 52 stakes winners to date.
