Afleet Alex was by all measures the most popular horse of the 2005. His near miss in the Kentucky Derby, dramatic display of athleticism in the Preakness Stakes and a dominating victory in the Belmont Stakes shed little doubt he was the leading force in that year’s classic races. In total, Afleet Alex won eight of his 12 career starts and earned more than $2.7 million in a most accomplished racing career. On Sept. 10, 2005, Afleet Alex returned to Delaware Park, the site of his maiden victory, where he was celebrated for his efforts on the racetrack as well as the inspiration he provided for Alex's Lemonade Stand, the charitable organization benefiting pediatric cancer research. His appearance at the track was an auspicious occasion with Delaware Gov. Ruth Ann Minner’s proclamation of Afleet Alex Day, honoring the 3-year-old colt's "extraordinary achievements" and also recognizing his connections, Delaware Park-based trainer Tim Ritchey and jockey Jeremy Rose, for their outstanding commitment to the state’s rich horse racing tradition. During the event, witnessed by an enormous gathering of loyal fans, Afleet Alex paraded in front of the crowd one last time, wearing this very saddlecloth, on a most memorable day.  The functional full-sized green saddlecloth with purple trim measures 40.5x42.5" and features the hand-stitched white lettering showcasing Afleet Alex's name as well as the celebration date and venue.
