Conquistador Cielo, Spanish for “conqueror of the sky,” was a promising juvenile in the summer of 1981 before suffering a saucer fracture of the shin that cut short his season. The slow-healing injury derailed his Triple Crown trail, but Hall of Fame trainer Woody Stephens decided to try an experimental treatment to stimulate growth in the bone, and Conquistador Cielo burst onto the racing scene in May 1982 as a phenom. After winning a May 8 allowance race at Pimlico and another on May 19 at Belmont Park, he dazzled in the May 31 Metropolitan Handicap. Only six days later, he became the first of Stephens’ five consecutive Belmont Stakes winners joining Caveat (1983), Swale (1984), Creme Fraiche (1985), and Danzig Connection (1986). Conquistador Cielo rounded out the summer and his career with two more wins in the Dwyer and Jim Dandy stakes races before finishing third in the Travers, where he suffered a career-ending injury. But his impressive performances earned him dual Eclipse Awards for Champion 3-Year-Old Colt and 1982 Horse of the Year. He retired with nine wins in 13 starts. His prolific breeding career produced 597 winners with 65 stakes winners before his death in 2002. The usual bar shoe was worn during his time as a stallion at Claiborne Farm and is mounted on a 8x9" wooden plaque with brass halter tag nameplate. A rare opportunity to own your own small piece of this talented champion.
