Sandwiched in the lore of 1970s horse racing legends was Bold Forbes, who hit the Triple Crown trail in 1976 as an underdog but emerged as the winner of two-thirds of the heralded Triple Crown. Bold Forbes began his racing career as a 2-year-old in Puerto Rico under the care of trainer Laz Barrera (who would go on to Triple Crown fame as the trainer of the great Affirmed). The speedster grandson of Bold Ruler quickly found success in the continental states winning the Tremont Stakes as a 2-year-old and then later the Bay Shore and Wood Memorial along the trail to the Kentucky Derby. In the 1976 Run for the Roses, Bold Forbes with jockey Angel Cordero aboard sprinted away to an upset victory over the odds-on favorite Honest Pleasure, and after finishing third in the Preakness proved his mettle once again winning the daunting 1 1/2 mile Belmont Stakes. Bold Forbes never finished out of the money, winning 13 of his 18 starts and was named 1976 Champion 3-Year-Old Colt. As a stallion, Bold Forbes sired 30 stakes winners, including champion Tiffany Lass. The steel stallion shoe is mounted on a 8x10" solid walnut plaque with brass halter tag nameplate and was acquired during his retirement at the Kentucky Horse Park. Bold Forbes died in 2007 at the venerable age of 27 and is appropriately buried at the park's Hall of Champions.
